The pesky bill (SB 742) that gives the state of Tennessee responsibility for permitting and enforcing coal mining will be heard tomorrow (Wednesday, March 31) by the Senate 2021 Senate Energy, Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. These responsibilities, ever dwindling as coal mining industry wanes, are currently handled by the federal Office of Surface Mining.

If the bill passes, and when it’s fully implemented, the state will be paying more than $850,000/year to take over this function. That is an unnecessary expense to Tennesseans.

Please reach out to members of the committee, listed below, tonight or tomorrow morning, and let them know that this is NOT a good move for Tennessee.
